Esther Kim Lee teaches courses in Asian American theatre, modern theatre, American ethnic theatre, and graduate seminars in theatre history, literature, and criticism. She is also a core teaching faculty in the Asian American Studies Program at UIUC. She is the author of A History of Asian American Theatre (Cambridge University Press, 2006), which received the 2007 Research Award for Outstanding Booklength Study in Theatre Practice and Pedagogy given by ATHE (Association for Theatre in Higher Education).
