A published and produced playwright, Allean Hale has since 1980 emerged as a leading authority on the work of Tennessee Williams, with dozens of articles on his plays and life. She edited four of Williams's rediscovered "lost" plays for New Directions: Not About Nightingales, The Notebook of Trigorin, Fugitive Kind, and Stairs to the Roof, which had its first performance in 53 years at Krannert Center in November, 2000. She was editorial assistant to Lyle Leverich, Williams' official biographer on Tom, the Unknown Tennessee Williams,1995, and consultant on four television documentaries, including American Masters. She is on the editorial board of the Tennessee Williams Annual Review, New Orleans. At Krannert she has served as dramaturg on Tennessee Williams productions
